Detailed investigation and influence of oxidation degree on synthesis, characterization and antibacterial activity of β- cyclodextrin

Today’s cyclodextrin: Did you know that some CDs also possess antimicrobial activity?
In this study by Ayhan Bergal and Muberra Andac oxidized β-cyclodextrins (OX-β-CDs) were obtained and aldehyde (CHO) groups were successfully introduced. Antibacterial activity of OX-β-CDs was investigated against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria by using the minimal inhibitory concentration. The results showed that OX-β-CDs possessed good antibacterial activity, which can destroy the bacterial cell wall, and may be used as an antibacterial agent.

Functionalization of breast implants by cyclodextrin in-situ polymerization: a local drug delivery system for augmentation mammaplasty

Today’s cyclodextrin is fascinating both form the chemisty and the application point of view. The objective was to functionalize commercially available silicone breast implants with smooth and textured surfaces through in-situ polymerization of two CDs: β-CD/citric acid and 2-hydroxypropyl-β-CD/citric acid. This functionalization serves as a local drug delivery system for the controlled release of therapeutic molecules that potentially can be a preventive treatment for post-operative complications in mammaplasty interventions.

Treatment of hypertriglyceridemia with 2-hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin

Fascinating therapeutic application of cyclodextrins have been published by Beren Therapeutics. Earlier the company already patented the use in the therapy of familial hypercholesterolemia, now they propose using hydroxypropyl-BCD against hypertriglyceridemia.
In the 2nd patent composition and purification is reported of a compounds that has a surprisingly high DS (DS-10 being the main component), which composition is far from the materials used as excipients.

GENEGUT 3rd General Assembly meeting

Last week, the GENEGUT consortium, where CarboHyde is a full partner, gathered for the project’s 3rd General Assembly meeting. This time again in-person, hosted by CarboHyde in Budapest, Hungary. The two-day meeting was a great opportunity to discuss the significant progress of GENEGUT’s first year and prepare for the next steps towards the development of an RNA-based therapy for Crohn’s Disease.

Just over 30 attendees from all 9 GENEGUT partners got together to hold this General Assembly meeting. Joined also by one of the project’s Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) members, Prof. Katie Whitehead (CMU). Prof. Dr. Csóka Ildikó from the University of Szeged, Hungary joined also as a guest lecturer and held an interesting session focusing on regulatory basics for nucleic acid APIs.

After kicking-off the day with a team-building activity, day one was dedicated to updates from the management side of the project and all its scientific work packages. The WP leads and early-career researchers presented their progress, interaction with other WPs, challenges and next steps. I think we have made significant progress over our first year and I am confident we can build on this over the coming months.” – concluded GENEGUT coordinator Prof. Caitriona O’Driscoll (UCC).

CarboHyde’s main responsibility in the project is to create a library of cyclodextrin-based compounds. Our colleague, Milo Malanga presented the progress CarboHyde’s team has achieved in the past year along the main results as well as the challenges this work involved.

Besides the focused work this workshop required from all the participants, we had the opportunity to visit some of the main attractions of Budapest, such as the Parliament and the Kossuth square and also enjoyed the local cousine.

Cyclodextrin in Vaccines: Enhancing Efficacy and Stability

In the context of vaccines, cyclodextrins can effectively encapsulate antigens, ensuring their protection from degradation and improving their immunogenicity. Cyclodextrins offer stability advantages to vaccines by preventing the degradation of labile vaccine components during storage and transportation. Furthermore, cyclodextrins can serve as adjuvants, potentiating the immune response triggered by vaccines.

Today’s cyclodextrin is a bit neglected, yet very important topic: Application of Cyclodextrins for Improvement Food Quality via Intelligent and Active Packaging
Did you know that CDs can be used to interact with the product or its environment to improve one or more aspects of its quality or safety? A known problem with some of these types of packaging is that the bioactive compounds that are housed in the CD can interact with food and can modify its taste, smell, color and/or texture.

Polyporenic Acids from the Mushroom Buglossoporus quercinus Possess Chemosensitizing and Efflux Pump Inhibitory Activities on Colo 320 Adenocarcinoma Cells

What a great day! One of our youngest, Kristóf Felegyi just placed another brick in the wall of his PhD with this article about isolating and identifying novel polyporenic acids and triterpenes from Buglossoporus quercinus. The current study reveals that B. quercinus is a remarkable source of fungal steroids with considerable chemosensitizing activity on cancer cells.
