Today’s cyclodextrin went all the way out to space, circled the Earth to arrive to your feed.
I am happy that I could contribute to this research minimally in my former life.
Stability assessment of drugs in space is particularly important for future missions. Multiple factors, such as the variability of the conditions (radiation, microgravity, vacuum, etc.) in space, could affect the reliability and reproducibility of the data.
Therefore, Cyclolab R&D Ltd., InnoStudio—Space Chemistry, and the Research Centre for Natural Science and National Drug Research and Development Laboratory in Hungary investigated the stability of an anti-COVID drug formulation, Remdesivir (RDV) sulfobutylether-beta-cyclodextrin (SBECD) complex, in two separate flight experiments on the International Space Station (ISS).
Unfortunately, the results are not conclusive, apparently more such studies are needed to learn about these effects.
