Cyclodextrin fiesta in Budapest

You may ask, where do cyclodextrin experts learn new tricks?

Of course, from other experts!

That is why we were extremely, grateful when Carmen Popescu from Roquette offered to give us a 2-day in person training. Even more so as Mohammad Qadir joined too.

So we gathered a small team of students and colleagues and are now bathing in cyclodextrin formulations.

Let’s make Hungarian biotech great again

Today we see a new dawn in Hungarian Biotech.

Yesterday I participated at the renewal meeting of the Hungarian Biotechnology Association where the president and board members were elected.

As Hungary is entering its renaissance as a country, its time for many innovative industries, such as biotech to revive as well.

I truly think that our resources are plenty, we have great companies, talented people and finally, a strong infrastructure to support us.

Now we need a good plan and hard work to make a change and impact.

I wish good luck, persistence and endurance to the reelected president Erno Duda and the fantastic board Daniel Veres MD PhD, Bertalan Jaszkuti, Arnold Feher and Andras Dinnyes.

If it’s gene delivery and custom cyclodextrins – count us in!

In this study – differing from the GENEGUT concept – our CSO, Milo Malanga PhD, designed cyclodextrin polymers that can form nanoplexes with various oligonucleotides due to their cationic nature. The we compared them with a standard polymer in the field: polyethylenimine.

QABCDPS exhibited lower toxicity compared to PEI, effectively binding both siRNA and mRNA and delivering them into vesicles in the cytoplasm, but showing different internalization patterns.

Polyplexes formed with PEI showed stronger biological effect than those with QABCDPS, which can be attributed to the strength of interactions facilitated by the polymers.

We hope to continue the collaboration with University of Debrecen – especially Ágnes Rusznyák and Ferenc Fenyvesi and design more efficient shuttles for the next round.

What Research Consortia Really Create

The most valuable thing about being in a research consortium is not the funding. It is the people who end up standing next to you at the bench for months at a time.

For a few months now, Daniele Veclani and Andrea Trifoglio from Isof CNR have been working alongside our team as part of the BICYCLOS project.

Projects like BICYCLOS create the conditions for mentorship and cross-institutional learning that benefit everyone involved. The visiting researchers gain an industry-side perspective on formulation and development thinking, and our team gains exposure to the analytical and mechanistic depth that academic groups like Isof CNR bring to the table.
Innovation in cyclodextrin science does not move forward in isolation. It moves forward when people who think differently end up in the same lab, working on the same problem for long enough that something real comes out of it.

Grateful to have Daniele and Andrea with us and curious to see where the work goes next.

CarboHyde and Shanghai Yusong: Advancing Gamma-Cyclodextrin Together

Last week, we welcomed three representatives of Shanghai Yusong Biotechnology Co., Ltd. to our offices, building on the conversation that began with Xi Chen’s visit the week before. What started as an introduction is moving into something more concrete, joint plans, a shared roadmap for gamma-cyclodextrin and a clear sense of where the collaboration can go from here.

The deepening relationship is the result of Tamás Vargadi‘s consistent groundwork and it sits on top of something larger. The work CarboHyde does today is connected to the pioneering legacy of József Szejtli, and partnerships like this one are how that legacy keeps moving forward, into new markets, new applications and new collaborations across continents.

Grateful to the Yusong team for making the trip and looking forward to what we can build together on gamma-cyclodextrin and beyond.

Our Formulation Scientist, Balázs Attila Kondoros, spent three intense days at the DDF Summit 2026 last week and returned with a head full of new ideas, conversations, and connections.

The drug delivery space is moving fast right now. New modalities, more complex molecules, and rising expectations around solubility, stability, and bioavailability mean the conversations at events like this one are more interesting than ever. As always, we kept coming back to the same question: where do cyclodextrins fit into the picture?
A huge thank you to everyone who shared a challenge or sat down for a proper conversation. These are the moments that make summits worth the trip.

Meet the team! – Milo Malanga

Some chemists are drawn to elegant molecules but Milo Malanga PhD
is drawn to the difficult ones and cyclodextrins, with all their complexity, are exactly the kind of puzzle he enjoys.

This preference for hard problems also shapes how he sees the work happening around him at CarboHyde. When asked which project he is most proud of, his answer is unexpected, because it is one he barely worked on himself.

“I am most proud of a French partners project, although I have done almost nothing about it. In my opinion, it is the most difficult project at CarboHyde, but it is also the best designed and best executed one – honestly, I could never do a project like this myself.”

There is a rare kind of pride in that answer – the kind that recognizes great work in others and acknowledges the standard a team can reach together.

If Milo could solve just one unanswered question in cyclodextrin chemistry tomorrow, he would not hesitate.

“I would focus on crossing the blood-brain barrier, and on achieving organ-specific tropism through cyclodextrin structure-activity relationships – two challenges that could reshape how active ingredients reach the places they truly need to go.”

The hardest problems rarely come with quick answers, but they are the ones worth showing up for, day after day.:)
